The United Nations Association of Mauritius (MUNA) was launched on 24th October 1976. MUNA is the Mauritius Branch of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), based at the UN, New York and Geneva. In the year 2001, MUNA obtained its consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (UN-ECOSOC). The UN-ECOSOC is the third important Organ of the UN after the General Assembly and Security Council. As an NGO enjoying special Consultative status with the UN ECOSOC, MUNA is now permitted to designate representatives at the United Nations Head Quarters in New York, and the United Nations Office in Geneva and Vienna. MUNA's President, Mr. Rashad Daureeawoo is elected Vice President of WFUNA.

UNA-Mauritius is seriously contemplating to host the 40th Plenary Assembly of World Federation of United Nations Associations in Mauritius in April 2012. Negotiations are presently ongoing at different levels.

UNA-Mauritius will give emphasis on program of special interests:

(1) Mauritius Sovereignty over the Chagos-Archipelago, including Diego Garcia Islands as per UN Declaration 1514 of 1960 stating the inalienable right of colonial peoples to independence, and Resolution 2066 of 1965.

(2) To bring worldwide awareness campaign in favour of Mauritian claim before the appropriate international tribunal to declare nullity of Marine Protected Areas ones around the Chagos-Archipelago depriving Mauritius of its fishing and other rights in the exclusive economic zone.

(3) To support all actions at national and International in making of Indian Ocean a Piracy Free Zone and including the surveillance detention and prosecution of pirates.
