1901 January 12-12 Centre passed over Reunion. 36 hours of gale force winds at Mauritius. Maximum one-hour average 87 kmph.

1908 March 1 Centre passed 30 kilometres to south-east. Although Pamplemousses recorded only a 77 kmph maximum one-hour mean, Mahebourg had a calm of nearly two hours, and the east and south-east suffered considerable damage.

 

 

1911 February 6 Part of Moka suffered damage, apparently as a result of a tornado during passage of cyclone fifty miles from Mauritius. Heavy rainfall. Some slight damage at Vacoas and Curepipe. Trees blown down, especially banyans.

1916 May 26 Late season cyclone uprooting trees, and causing some damage.

 

 

1921 March 10 Large banyans overturned. Telephone and telegraph poles blown down in "incredible numbers". A few roofs blown off. Mean wind over one hour: 67.5 kmph. Centre passed about 80 km to north-north-east.

1925 December 12 Some houses damaged, trees blown down, crops battered. Centre passed 100 km east.

1926 April 18 Maximum one-hour velocity given as 70 kmph. Pressure minimum 985 mb - centre passed 65 km east.

 

 

1931 March 5-8 A major cyclone. Centre passed over southern part of Mauritius on west-south-west course and recurved before reaching Reunion. Lowest pressure 969 mb at Vacoas. Highest one-hour-speed 100 kmph. Very heavy rains with gusts of order 120 kmph for three days. Rainfall of 500 to 2000 mm, with one station, La Marie 3300 mm. Maximum gusts of order 180 kmph.

1932 April 10 Weak cyclone passed over Mauritius. No serious damage.

1934 January 28-29 Passage rapid but a sustained one-hour-mean wind of 80 kmph was reached at Vacoas and 48 kmph at Pamplemousses. Minimum pressure: 981 mb. No calm, but wind decreased. Numerous roofs lost. Crops and fruit trees damaged. Curepipe market and railway station and cinema hall partly unroofed.

 

 

1945 January 16-17 Very severe hurricane. Maximum one-hour wind speeds 100, 95, 105 kmph at Pamplemousses, Vacoas and Plaisance respectively.Minimum pressure recorded 953 mb. A major disastrous cyclone.

1945 February 1-2 A deep cyclone, but the ring of hurricane winds only affected the southern parts of Mauritius, so that maximum one-hour winds were 79 kmph at Pamplemousses, 87 kmph at Vacoas and 111 kmph at Plaisance. Considerable damage in the south.

1945 April 7 Centre passed 120 km south of Mauritius causing maximum one-hour speeds of 45 kmph at Pamplemousses, 64 at Vacoas and 85 at Plaisance. Mentioned here mainly becaused 1945 is remembered as the year with three cyclones.

 

 

1960 January 20 The eastern part of Cyclone ALIX passed over Mauritius, the centrer being about 65 km to the west of Port Louis at its closest. Gusts of 160 to 200 kmph and lowest pressure 969 mb recorded in Mauritius. Considerable damage.

1960 February 28 Cyclone CAROL, the most violent on record at Mauritius. Centre crossed Mauritius from north to south with minimum pressure 943 mb. Caused unprecedent havoc. Wind gusts of up to 256 kmph were registered. Over 100,000 homeless. Sugar crop reduced 40 % and trees and other vegetation suffered heavily. Taught Mauritians to change to concrete as building material of choice.

1961 December 25 Cyclone BERYL. Gusts between 115 and 160 kmph, generally but Fort William reported 200 kmph.

1962 February 28 Cyclone JENNY. Centre passed 60 km north of Pamplemousses which recorded a one hour mean of 129 kmph, but the peak gust was recorded as only 196 kmph. Northern part of Mauritius suffered extensive damage.

1964 January 20 Danielle passed on a north-south track about 50 km west of the Morne. The highest gusts were 156 kmph at FUEL and 220 kmph at Plaisance which also recorded a mean of 128 kmph over one hour. Intensified near Mauritius.

 

 

1975 February 6 / Intense tropical cyclone GERVAISE (given name on February 3) crossed Mauritius when it was 5,5 on Dvorak scale and reached its highest intensity T6 on February 7 at 200 km south of Mauritius. On the island, lowest pressure 951 mb. Max gusts of order 100 to 210 kmph generally, 280 kmph at Mon Desert which is subject to orographic enhancement for north-west sector winds. Weaker structures damaged. Sugar crop reduced by 30 %.

1978 January 18-21 Cyclone FLEUR. Mean hourly speed 61 kmph at Pamplemousses. Highest gusts at 10 metre height between 110 and 145 kmph.

1979 December 22-23 CLAUDETTE. Centre passed over Mauritius in small hours of the morning of 23 december with lowest pressure 965 mb. Gusts 175 to 220 kmph over different parts of the island. Considerable damage to crops and telephone and electric wires.

 

 

1980 January 16-29 HYACINTHE not an intense cyclone at Mauritius with Pamplemousses one-hour-maximum only 40 kmph, but produced record January rainfalls: 680 to 1325 mm.

1983 December 25 Cyclone BAKOLY passed 30 miles west of Mauritius, at its closest on south-south-easterly course. Gusts of order 175 kmph on west coast and east of the island had lower speeds.

1989 January 28-29 Cyclone FIRINGA passed 45 km north-west of Mauritius, before reaching Reunion island which experienced winds of order 250 kmph.

1993 January 19 Cyclone COLINA passed 220 km north-west of Mauritius. No serious damage. My interest for cyclones started with Colina...when i saw its name on the Newspaper "Le Mauricien".

1993 January 27 Intense Cyclone EDWINA passed 200 km north of Mauritius. Gust of 124 kmph at Fort William.

 

1994 February 10. Cyclone HOLLANDA crossed the north of Mauritius at 22h local time. minimul pressure at Plaisance: 984. Gusts exceeded 216 kmph, maybe up to 280 in Port-Louis, given the damages at the top of the State Bank in construction. Rainfalls reached 711mm at Vacoas. My first experience of a cyclone ! 1996 February 25  Moderate tropical depression EDWIGE passed 100 km north of Mauritius, where winds of 120 to 150 kmph occured. At the peak time of the depression, i was on the road from Grand-Baie to Curepipe..astonishing !

1996 December 8  Cyclone DANIELLA passed 55 kms west of Le Morne(cf 20/01/1964). Gusts of 170 kmph were recorded, 155 kmph at Vacoas with 400 mm of rain during the cyclone.

1999 March 9  Cyclone DAVINA (955 mb) crossed the south-east of Mauritius. Hardly any rain, and gusts did not exceed 120 kmph in the north. On the contrary, in the south-east, gusts may have reached 180 to 190 kmph , with some houses which were blown away.
