Saint-Pierre is situated in the
district of Moka which is found on the Central Plateau. It is
the biggest village in the region. Evangelism in the region of
St-Pierre began in a small isolated village called Côte D’Or.
The ways of the Lord are sometimes strange and mysterious.
It was in 1974. Two Christian brothers from Port-Louis
came to Côte D’Or every Sunday afternoon to distribute gospel
tracts and to talk to the people about the love of JESUS. They
met a christian brother who lived there and who was converted to
Christ a year before. It was brother Vishnu Appalasawmy who was
at that time attending Rose-Hill A/G where brother N. Blackburn
was the pastor in charge.
After that, Pastor Blackburn went to Côte D’Or to preach the
gospel. The meetings took place in the house of brother Vishnu
every Tuesday and Thursday. The newly converted Christians had
to face fierce persecution. After a few months the small church
went to Camp Auguste, another small village not far from Côte
D’Or. They did not stay long at Camp Auguste . The brothers
began to look for a more convenient place.
The Lord guided them to the Balliol College at Helvetia, a
village nearer to Saint-Pierre than Côte D’Or or Camp Auguste.
The meetings continued at Balliol College up to 1977. At the end
of 1977 Brother Blackburn, the President of the Assemblies of
God in Mauritius, asked Pastor Jean-Claude Sangahoupie to take
charge of the church.
While the church was at Balliol College, a plot of land was
bought at Petit Verger, Saint-Pierre and a church was built
there. The church building was inaugurated on the 6th October
1979. Brother Sangahoupie continued his ministry at St-Pierre
A/G until 1981. At the beginning of 1982, when Brother Christome
came back from Rodrigues island after 3 years ministry there,
Pastor J-C. Sangahoupie went to Rodrigues to replace him. As
from 1982 up to now brother Christome and his wife Jeanine have
been in charge of the St-Pierre A/G and the churches in Moka.
The St-Pierre A/G is the mother church in the region and has
given birth to other churches in Moka. We praise God for the
wonderful growth and for all the blessings He has bestowed upon
us.
The church
at St-Pierre was a concrete building with a roof made of
corrugated iron sheets. The roof was severely damaged by several
violent cyclones. In December 1999 brother Christome put before
the congregation the project of a complete renovation of the
church and to replace the corrugated iron sheets by a concrete
slab. The reconstruction works began in January 2000 and the new
building was inaugurated on the 11th November 2000. As more
space was needed for our different regional meetings, we decided
that an extension should be added to the building. The work
started in January 2004 and the new church, which is much
bigger, was inaugurated on the 26th September 2004.
We have seen the hand of the Lord at every step of the
construction. We did not have much money but the Lord has
miraculously provided all that was needed. The brothers and
sisters have been very generous. May the Lord bless them
abundantly.
