The Mauritian Garden of Eden is as
much marine and "Sub-marine" as it is terrestrial. The
jewel of the seas, set with8in the beautiful Indian Ocean, is
surrounded by a precious filigree of coral, created over thousands
of years from the bodies of tiny marine creatures. Enchantment
touches everyone who ventures off shore and into the reef’s
iridescent lagoons – It’s the experience of a lifetime!
You’ll never enjoy the freedom of
the ocean as much as you will on the Island of Mauritius. Visitors
have access to all the water sports, and Water skiing, windsurfing,
inshore sailing, etc., are free-of-charge at participating hotels.
For the more adventurous, sailing cruises are available on the
schooner "Isla Mautitia". The unique atmosphere created by
this 19th century tall ship as she glides through the
tranquil Mauritian waters is an experience not to be missed.
Spacious catamarans also offer day cruises around the island.
Whatever your past experience,
diving on the Island’s coral gardens is memorable for the warmth
of the sea (a relaxing 27degrees at the surface), the beauty of the
surroundings and the diversity of marine life. Parrot fish, thick
lipped groupers, wrasse, sweetlips, angel and squirrelfish vie for
your attention, while multi-hued sponges, corals, anemones and fan
worms form a dignified backdrop to the kaleidoscopic melee of
creatures.

Deep sea fishing in Mauritius –
ride the ocean swells in a sleek 40 footer by day, sip a native
cocktail on a white coral beach at sunset; it’s then that you will
know you have discovered an angler’s paradise.
A simple look will convince you that there is no place in the world
where giant marlins of up to 1,000 lbs. Can be hooked within 15
minutes of boarding your boat. In fact, Mauritius held the
all-tackle world record for Pacific Blue marlin with 1,100 lbs.
Big game fishing as a sport is practiced throughout the
year in Mauritius, although the best season for marlin is from
October to April. The big predators feed about a mile from the
shoreline where the bottom falls away to 2,000 feet. Black, Blue and
Striped Marlins can be taken, along with Sailfish, Wahoo, Dorado,
Yellow-fin tuna, Bonito or Shark. |

The
lagoons are the theater of many exciting and stimulating activities.
Water skiing, for example, can be practiced throughout the year by
skilled skiers as well as by beginners. Facilities for Water skiing
are available at all boat houses including the services of
experienced coaches. From time to time the boat house staff put on
interesting demonstrations to gratify their clients.
The manager of the
boat house will be only too pleased to keep you posted on the
currents and the winds. Those who fancy stronger thrills can always
try parasailing and enjoy the breathtaking view of the lagoon and
its kaleidoscopic underwater seascapes from a parachute tailed by a
launch. Or you can rent a powerful motor boat and roar across the
lagoon and outside the reef and feel the intoxication of the wind
and the flying spray on your suntanned body.
There are a few
places on the coast where the waves do not come to die gently on the
beach. Instead they race in successive waves to crash on the beach
with a thunderous roar. Such places are the regular venues of
surfers who rendezvous every weekend to ride the rollers. At the end
of the day they are all exhausted but exhausted like kids.
