Mauritius is an island located in the Indian Ocean which is about 800km (550 miles) east of Madagascar and 2,000 km (1,250 miles) off the nearest point of the African coast. The island of Rodrigues, an integral part of Mauritius, is located about 560 km (350 miles) off its northeastern coast.

 

Mauritius is mostly of volcanic formation and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs. A coastal plain, widest in the north, rises sharply to a 1,500 ft high plateau bordered by three mountain ranges - the Black River Range, the Grand Port Range, and the Moka Range. The longest river is the Grand River South East,, about 25 miles in length 

There island is served by most major airlines such as Air Mauritius, British Airways, Air France, Air Italia, Lufthansa, etc... The flight from London last for 11 hours.

The island was first visited by the Arabs. The first people to settle were the Dutch. Then came the French in 1715. The British took over after defeating the French at the Battle of Grand Port ( An Excellent diving area ). 

Mauritius is part of the Commonwealth. It received independence on the 12 March 1968, and became a Republic on the same day in 1992. Port Louis is the Capital and also the main commercial and administrative centre. 

The population is made up of many races from Asia, Africa and Europe, all working together in perfect harmony. The official language is English but most people speak French. 

The temperature from December to April averages 30C .The humid season is April till June. From July to September it is about 20C.The best time to visit is Nov/Dec when all the tropical fruit are in season. The average temperature at that time is 25C 

But if you only care about the sun and sea then a visit anytime in the year would be fine.

Mauritius is surrounded by golden beaches, almost deserted during week days. The temperature of the sea will always be a perfect 24C. The beaches are protected by the corals reefs which nearly surrounds the island . The reefs are full of multicoloured fish. A great experience for divers

The currency is the Rupee.

The island is well served by international banks such as Barclays, Lloyds and HSBC. The local banks are the State Bank and the Mauritius Commercial Bank
