My Love for Mathematics

Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty -

a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture. Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970)

I believe, I first got interested in Mathematics when I was in Form III at R.C.P.L. I had Mr Chutton as my teacher, and that guy did a hell of a job to convince me that my future lies with Mathematics, and not with Medicine. Not that I was gonna study Medicine, anyway, but, just like most of the kids of my age, I always used to dream about becoming a surgeon.

Then came Mr Tegaully, who not only encouraged me in Mathematics, but also added a unique flavour to the subject. A couple of times, and I'm sure he didnt realise it himself at that time, he would tell us how he used to struggle while trying to remember his equations when he was doing his Degree. And, he would also teach us a few tricks to remember certain formulae. All these minor things got accumulated, and finally got me convinced that what I really wanted to study was Mathematics. At H.S.C level, my favorite topics were Differentiation - Integration, Trigonometry, and some Statistics-related topics, and one of the topics I was less fond of, was Vectors.

I remember, before I went to India for my studies, sitting in front of T.V everyday and watching Des Chiffres & Des Lettres but all I was interested in was the Number part. Esme will tell you that even now, the only thing I do when I am bored, is to set up a set of 6 numbers, and an arbitrary target, and try to work out how to get to the Target. I also got Ibrahim to write me a Programme in Visual Basic which generates some Numbers and Target. I guess the love for Maths increased when I went to India, because not only were we just learning Maths, but we were attending The Saturday Club, where students get to learn interesting things on Mathematics. You can check my section on MATHEMATICS TRIVIA, and you will get a fair idea of what I am talking about.

Studing Maths [Degree] was just awesome. I mean, we always think that Mathematics is one of the easiest, if not the easiest, subjects while we study A-Levels, but when you are doing your degree, the truth is far from it. All these Theorems, Proofs, Calculations, Derivations, etc.. make Maths more spicy. Well, I can only talk for myself, but I enjoyed every moment of my time when I was doing my Degree in Mathematics.. Then, of course came the 1-yr I spent in my Masters Degree, which was more of a specialization in Computational Maths with Modelling [in simple terms: Differential Equations and Integration. After that i did some research in a Physics-related field, but with Maths application [Particle Tracking in Multi-Phase Flows], and now my Part-Time research on Value-at-Risk.

I will always love this subject, and my interests are Mathematical Modelling, Geometry [Good Old Geom.], Algebra, Numerical Analysis [Of Course..] etc.... I also like spending my time checking Maths-related problems on the net. I just love having a go at them. I shall request anyone who comes across this page and who wants to share some Mathematics work with me, to come forward and Email Me.

I am including some interesting Mathematics links here, and I hope you will check them if somehow, just like me, you are fond of Mathematics.
