Port Louis
Capital city and main part of Mauritius, Port Louis lies
on the north-western coast and is protected by a semi-circle of mountains. The
city covers only around 45 square kilometres, but the capital being the centre
of business activities, welcomes more than 100 000 additional people every
morning. The town still shows signs of its past elegance - the Government House
off the palm-lined Place d'Armes, the Municipal Theatre, the Supreme Court, the
Museum, and also colonial houses lodged between modern buildings. Port Louis
best reflects the Mauritius kaleidoscopic nation, fascinating in the lively Port
Louis market, busiest place in the capital which everyone should visit.
From Fort Adelaide, (La Citadelle) a fortified citadel
dating from William IV and now an open-air theatre, magnificent high-up views of
the Champ de Mars race course, the town and harbour can be enjoyed. Almost
opposite, at the foot of Montagne des Signaux, is the monument of Marie Reine de
La Paix, a place of Catholic pilgrimage; from its gardens a panoramic view of
the city may be enjoyed.
