What is MUG?

The Mauritius Underwater
Group (MUG) is a non-
profit organisation and
a diving club. It was formed
in 1964 and is the oldest
diving club on the island.
It was MUG who discovered
most of the dive sites for example:
the wreck of HMS Sirius, the
British naval ship sunk during
the battle of Vieux Grand Port. MUG is
affiliated with BSAC (British Sub-Aqua Club) as number 322; it is also one of the founder members of the Mauritian Federation (MSDA) and the Mauritius Marine Conservation Society (MMCS). MUG has 125 diving members, 9 of whom are dive marshalls.

Who can be a member of MUG ?

Anyone over the age of 18 may be a member of MUG. Do you have to know how to dive to be a member of MUG ? No, MUG organises diving courses and awards BSAC qualifications. Can you dive with MUG with PADI or CMAS qualifications ? Yes, all qualifications are accepted by MUG.

Where is MUG ?

The MUG clubhouse is in Phoenix on the Railway Road (see map). It is here that dive bottles are filled, theory classes take place, diving meetings held and also, each Tuesday, the club "barbecue evenings".

Where does MUG dive ?

Dives are arranged on Tuesdays and take place most often on Thursdays (for night dives), Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. In 2003 the MUG carried out 1176 person-dives in 148 expeditions to 73 different sites.

How much does it cost ?

For someone already qualified: 1,000 RS Membership Fee and a monthly subscription of 250 RS. Dives are free. It is possible to rent equipment from MUG if the person does not own their own, and they will share in the cost of boat hire. For someone who wishes to learn to dive and register for a beginners' diving course : 10,000 RS. This sum includes the MUG Membership Fee (entrance fee included), 12 months subscription fees, a years subscription to BSAC (including 3rd Party Insurance coverage) and a year's subscription of "DIVE" magazine, the theory classes, dive log and manual, the theory exam, 5 shallow water training sessions followed by an exam and 5 qualifying dives (including the cost of equipment hire and boat.
