A Pap Test

"What is it and why should I have it?"

Cancer of the cervix can be prevented. It is easy to spot the signs with the aid of a simple test. All women over 30 years of age should have the test. This booklet tells you all you need to know about the test.

"What is a Pap Test?"

It is a simple test to check the health of the cervix.

"What is a cervix?"

The lower part of the womb

"Will the test hurt?"

No. It doesn't hurt, but it helps if you are relaxed.

"Who does the test?"

A qualified Doctor or Nurse

"Will the Doctor or Nurse be a woman?"

Yes. At the MFPA only women do the test.

"Will I have to take my clothes off?"

You will need to undress from the waist down. The test will be done in a closed and private room.

"What will happen during the test?"

You will lie on a couch. The Doctor or Nurse will put a small instrument into your vagina to keep it open. A small, smooth stick will be gently wiped against the cervix to collect a few cells. These cells will be checked under a microscope.

"When can I have the test?"

Anytime except when you are menstruating.

"What about sex before the test?"

You should not have sex in the 24 hours before the test.

"When will I know the results?"

When you have the test the Doctor or Nurse will tell you how long it will be before the result is known. It is normally within 2 weeks.

"If I'm asked to take another test, what does it mean?"

It might only mean that your test sample didn't collect enough cells and it needs to be done again. It may be that the test has shown that you have another minor infection that needs to be treated. In a very small number of cases does it mean that something serious has been found.

"If abnormal cells are found can something be done?"

Yes. The doctor will explain what is done. You might be asked to go to hospital for further tests.

"How difficult is the treatment?"

The treatment is very simple and, if done early enough, nearly always cures the problem.

"Should all women have the test?"

Yes. But it is more important if you are over 30 years of age.

"Should I have the test more than once?"

Yes. If you are aged over 30 years you should have the test done at least once every 3 years. Over 65s should ask the doctor for advice about how often they should have the test done.

"Is the test important?"

Yes. It could save your life.
