What is Linux?

Linux is a free Operating System that was created by Linus Torvalds in the beginning of the 1990's. It was based upon the Unix architecture.

Linux has developed the reputation of being a very stable system.

There are many distributions of Linux out there. Some of them are:

• Debian
• Redhat
• Mandrake
• Caldera

The most popular distribution is Redhat. However experienced Linux users would favor Debian.

Getting Linux

Since Linux is free it can be downloaded freely from the internet. You should bear in mind that Linux is quite a huge program, some distributions being over 600 mb.  

Getting Linux in Mauritius

You can get Linux in Mauritius by:

• Joining the Mauritius Linux User Group mailing list and asking for a copy of the distribution you are looking for.
• Contacting the Centre SYFED
