Names of ALLAH

What are the Names of ALLAH ?

Almighty God reveals in the Holy Quran, His unique attributes, worthy and suitable only to Him, The Unique, The Creator of all things. These perfect and unparalled attributes reflect the magnimity of Almighty Allah and His absolute superiority above whatever mankind, without knowledge, falsely attribute to Him.

"Allah! There is no god but He! To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names." (Surah Ta Ha 20/8)

"The Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah : so call on Him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in His names : for what they do, they will soon be requited." (Surah Al-A'raf 7/180)

"He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Forms (or colours). To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names : whatever is in the heavens and on earth, does declare His Praises and Glory : and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (Surah Al-Mumtahinah 59/24)

Furthermore, Almighty Allah clearly exhorts mankind to believe in Him, to submit oneself to His rule and to reject false associations with Him. The following chapter (Surah) of the Holy Quran superbly conveys this message of unicity and lordship of Allah :-

" In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
1. Say : He is Allah, the One and Only;
2. Allah,the Eternal, Absolute;
3. He begets not, nor is He begotten;
4. And there is none like unto Him. " (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112)

From the tradition (Sunnah) of the Last Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (Peace be upon him) :

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: There are ninety-nine names of Allah; he who commits them to memory would get into Paradise. Verily, Allah is Odd (He is one, and it is an odd number) and He loves odd number. (Reference : Al-Bukhari No 2531, 5931, 6843)

Why is it essential to know the Names of Almighty Allah ?

Mankind is reminded of his need, in his existence, of Almighty Allah, The Self-Sufficient and Worthy of All Praise.

"O you men! It is you that have need of Allah : but Allah is the One Free of all wants, Worthy of all praise." (Surah Fatir 35/15)

Allah, The Most Merciful thus reveals His attributes to man in order to

"Say: " Call upon Allah, or call upon ar-Rahman: by whatever name you call upon Him, (it is well): for to Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. Neither speak your Prayer aloud, nor speak it in a low tone, but seek a middle course between." (Surah Bani Israail 17/110)
