de Clous).
|
It is a small, erect and slender tree. It can reach 5 m in height. The bark is greyish brown. It has smooth branches. The leaves are petiolated, smooth and measure 2-5 mm in length. They are also canaliculated above. The
lamina is elliptical, subcircular or oval-elliptical, measuring 3.5-5 (-6.5) ´1.8-3.5
(-5.5) cm. The leaves are obtuse at the top, obtuse or more or less truncated
at the base, with a highly revolute margin. The mid rib is flattened on the
upper surface while it is prominent on the lower surface. There are 7-11 pairs
of ascending, lateral veins, which are prominent on the lower surface.
Intramarginal veins are found 2 mm from the margin. The upper surface is dark
green while the lower surface is pale green or yellowish green. Flowers
are sessile. They rarely have peduncles reaching 2 mm in length. They are
grouped in 2-5 short aphyllous protuberances at the axil of inferior leaves.
They can also be found at the nodes on the defoliate part of branches. The
bracteoles are squamiform, about 1 mm long and deciduous. Floral buds vary
from globular to obovoid. They are rounded at the tip, are 4-5 mm long and
measure 3-5 mm in diameter. They also bear a small pore at the top with pink,
dense hairs. The floral tube is prolonged over the ovary by 3-4 mm. The calyx
lobes are connate. Petals are subcircular, white, and ciliated and measure 2-3 mm in diameter. Stamens are 3-4 mm long and are white in colour. The anthers are oblong and are 0.8 mm long. The ovary is bilocular, bearing 15-20 ovules per locule. The style is 3-4 mm long, being ellipsoidal or globular and having a diameter of 1-2.5 cm. There are 3-4 (-17) seeds, which are 8-12 long and compressed. The testa is more or less free from the cotyledons. |
