Bush about 3-5 m in height rarely with the branches spread out. The leaves are oboval 3-8 x 2.5-5 cm or sometimes subcircular or elliptical 10 x 3 cm; thick, green on the upper surface, greenish white on the lower surface, with the secondary veins being somewhat invisible. The petiole measures approximately 5 mm in length. The young leaves are narrower than adult ones and tend to be blueish green in colour but this fades rapidly. The stipules are about 2 mm in length. Flowers usually occur in groups of three, are 6-7 mm in diameter and bear pedicels 0.8 to 1 cm in length that show pentagonal symmetry.
The
calyx is 1.5 mm x 0.5 mm in diameter. Petals
are 6 m in length and either elliptical or obovoid in shape. Ligules are also
present and are fused to the petals. The androecium is 5 mm long and this
comprises the 1.5 mm urceolate tube. The
ovary is 2.5 mm long while the styles may either be 3-4 mm or 1 mm depending
on the type of flower. The drupe
is red in colour and 1-1.5 cm in length.
It is found in humid regions of the central plateau: Pétrin, Plaine Champagne, etc., where it is very common in primary forests.
