It
may reach up to a height of 15-20 m and a diameter of more than 1 m, but
is mostly found as a small tree. The fibrous bark, which is pale
brown at the start, turns greyish afterwards and has longitudinal cracks.
The leaves are more or less persistent and elliptical in shape, pale green
above and bright green below. The inflorescence is a racemose one
with10-20 hanging flowers. The pedicel is a little sunk in the receptacle.
The calyx is smooth
with 5 fleshy sepals that can be either reddish or greenish and somewhat
ciliated along the margins. The corolla is light red or more or less fading
to a paler tone and urceolate. There are 10 white stamens that bear
yellow anthers. The ovary is globular and light green in colour.
The style is as long as the corolla and emerges from a depression at the
top of the ovary.
var salicifolia The leaves are usually 4.5 x 1.1 cm but can reach up to 5.5 x 1.6 cm. The petiole is 0.6-1.2 cm long. Flowers are 8-9 mm long and 4-5 mm wide. Stamens are 5 mm long with anthers 1.2 mm in length. The ovary is 2 mm long and bears a 7 mm long style, while the capsule can be as long as 6 mm. The plant is found
in exposed sites, on mountain crests, on eroded soil and on very sloppy
land where it grows as a bush and is not found in the forest.
