MISCELLANEOUS

The immigrants of Mauritius,namely the settlers of French,Indian, and Chinese origins have of course brought with them their own tastes and preferences for food which they had to adopt to the various local products available. Mauritian food is a myriad of fish and seafood dishes ,spicy and exotic recipes made up with unusual tropical ingredients. Mauritian food is a combination of African, European and Asian dishes. Rice is the staple diet of Mauritians... Chillies are unquestionably the favourite spice,and fortunately they grow in abundance on the island,wild or cultivated.

Shop signs are in English, French or chinese or in all three. Television and radio programmes are broadscast in a dozen languages and there are more than 30 newspapers and magazines for a popolation of just over a million,but with one of he highest literacy rates in the world.
